What is Theory of Mind?

In psychology, “theory of mind” refers to the capacity to understand other people by ascribing mental states to them. The “theory of mind” consists of an array of psychological processes that play essential roles in human social life.

“The “theory of mind” of AI is part of simulating the behavior of the core architecture of the human brain, which includes reinforcement learning and other deep learning algorithms.” — Amit Ray, Pioneer of Compassionate AI.

AI and the Theory of Mind

Machine learning is at the forefront of the latest and greatest technological developments. Learning how to make use of the most of this technology for understanding human emotions is the key to the theory of mind.

A Turing machine is an abstract model of an idealized computing device with unlimited time and storage space at its disposal. In 1939, Alan Turing, contemplated whether we could build a computer capable of thought.

“A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human.” -Alan Turing

The Turing computation became central to the emerging interdisciplinary initiative cognitive science, which studies the mind by drawing upon psychology, and Artificial Intelligence.

Natural Language Processing and Emotion Analysis

Modern artificial intelligence is focused more and more on the social cognitive domains of empathy and theory of mind. An appreciation for the workings of another person’s mind is considered a prerequisite for natural language acquisition and theory of mind.

Recently, Amazon comprehend, an AI based Natural Language Processing has been very successful. AI based NLP builds on the concept of artificial emotional intelligence and takes a very human like approach to AI.

Sentiment Analysis and Artificial Intelligence

People tend to behave and express themselves differently based on their different cultures or ages. Sentiment analysis, which enables companies to determine the emotional value of communications. It includes text analysis and also audio and video analysis on real time basis. It includes word analysis, facial analysis, and vocal signature analysis.

Recently, Google Cloud released its Intelligent Impact Solution, which includes a sentiment analysis component so that government agencies can better target their communication efforts and understand changing beliefs and behaviors.

Concluding Thoughts

Artificial Intelligence be a powerful and beneficial tool. It can have emotions. Surely, artificial intelligence one day surpass human thinking. However, in my opinion, you need to take things progressively to make the most of what it offers. As time passes, machine learning predictions will grow more reliable and accurate.
